Information We Collect
When you use Translation Mixer without an account, we do not collect personally identifiable information. We log anonymous usage data (such as IP address and request counts) solely for rate limiting and abuse prevention purposes. If you create an account, we collect your username and your email address. New accounts require an email address and we ask you to verify it by clicking a link we send you — without a verified address there is no way to recover the account if you forget your password. If you sign in with Google, we receive your Google account email and display name, and we treat that address as verified because Google has already confirmed it. If you choose to subscribe to our newsletter, we also record the date, time and IP address of that opt-in, as the record that you asked for it.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to: - Operate and improve Translation Mixer - Enforce daily translation quotas - Authenticate your account and maintain your session - Allow you to save and retrieve your translations - Send account emails — address verification and password reset links
Email and the Newsletter
We send two kinds of email, and they are separate. **Account email** is sent when you sign up, when you change your email address, and when you request a password reset. These are not optional: they are how you prove the address is yours and how you get back into a locked-out account. We do not use them for marketing. **The newsletter** is only ever sent if you explicitly opt in — the checkbox at signup is unchecked by default, and the toggle on your account page starts off. We record when you opted in and the IP address it came from. Every newsletter carries a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can also switch it off at any time from your account page. Unsubscribing from the newsletter does not stop account email. We do not sell or share your email address with third parties.
Translation Data
The text you submit for translation is processed by Google Translate and/or Microsoft Azure Translator to serve your request. Which provider handles a given request depends on capacity and on which languages you select, and a single request may use both — some languages are only available from one provider. To prevent abuse, debug problems, and enforce rate limits, translation requests (including the submitted text) are also recorded in our server logs. Logged translation text is automatically deleted after 30 days; the remaining log entry (IP address, timing, and status information) is deleted after 90 days. If you are signed in and choose to save a translation, it is stored in association with your account and can be deleted by you at any time. If you create a shareable mix link, the shared text is stored so the link works; anonymous mix links expire automatically after 30 days.
Advertising and Cookies
Translation Mixer displays advertisements served by Google AdSense. Google and its advertising partners use cookies and similar technologies — including the DoubleClick cookie — to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site and other websites across the internet. This is known as interest-based or personalised advertising. Depending on your consent choices, you may be shown personalised ads (based on your interests) or non-personalised ads (based only on general context such as the page you are viewing). Where required by law — including in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland — we ask for your consent through a consent banner before any advertising cookies are set, and advertising tags remain disabled until you respond. You can change or withdraw your consent at any time via the banner's privacy settings. Third-Party Services
Translation Mixer uses the following third-party services: - **Google Translate** — your input text may be sent to Google's translation API to perform translations. Google's privacy policy applies to this data. - **Microsoft Azure Translator** — your input text may also be sent to Microsoft's translation API, either when Google's monthly capacity is reached or when you select a language only Microsoft supports. Microsoft's privacy statement applies to this data: https://privacy.microsoft.com/privacystatement - **Google reCAPTCHA** — used to protect against automated abuse. reCAPTCHA collects hardware and software information and sends it to Google for analysis. - **Google AdSense** — we display advertisements served by Google AdSense (publisher ID: ca-pub-2033523477142224). Google and its partners may use cookies to serve ads based on your interests and prior visits. See the Advertising and Cookies section above for opt-out options. - **Google Analytics** — we use Google Analytics to understand aggregate usage patterns. This data is anonymised and not linked to individual users. You may opt out using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
Cookies
We use cookies for the following purposes: - **Session cookie** — keeps you logged in. This cookie is HttpOnly and not accessible to JavaScript. We also set a non-sensitive indicator cookie so the site can detect whether you have an active session without making an unnecessary network request. - **Theme preference** — your light/dark mode choice is stored in your browser's localStorage, not a cookie, and never leaves your device. - **Google AdSense cookies** — set by Google and its advertising partners for interest-based advertising. These cookies may track your activity across websites. Data Retention
Account data is retained for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account yourself from your account page — that immediately removes your account, saved translations, community submissions and reactions — or you may contact us to request deletion. Server logs containing translation text are purged after 30 days, and the remaining log entries after 90 days. Anonymous rate-limiting records are purged automatically once their quota window expires.
Children's Privacy
Translation Mixer is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will indicate the date of the most recent update at the top of this page. Continued use of Translation Mixer after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
